What is EMS Airflow Cleaning?
Airflow by EMS is one of the latest Swiss technology. It is a teeth cleaning device that uses air, water, and fine powder to effectively remove plaque and persistent stains such as tea, coffee, tobacco and red wine from teeth. Airflow gives your teeth a thorough professional clean that removes biofilm, the harmful bacteria that we all have, with more precision and minimal discomfort.
What is the difference between EMS Airflow and traditional Scale and Cleaning?
A traditional “scale and clean” (also known as a professional prophylaxis) is a routine procedure where the dentist removes plaque, tartar, and stains from your teeth using an ultrasonic scaler. The process involves scaling away hardened plaque (tartar) from above and below the gumline, followed by polishing with a rubber cup and special paste to remove any remaining surface stains and leave your teeth smooth and clean. This traditional scale and cleaning is also effective at preventing gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath, maintaining overall oral health.
EMS Airflow on the other hand uses plaque disclosing gel first to make biofilm visible and then air, water and fine powder to remove the harmful bacteria. Once this step is completed, the hardened plaque will then be removed with a Piezon scaler.
What is Biofilm?
Biofilm on teeth is also known as dental plaque. It is a sticky, colourless coating made up of microorganisms that can cause harm to your teeth when not cleaned off properly. It can be the leading cause for tooth cavity and decay, gum disease and other health issues. The bacteria starts to stick onto tooth surfaces if it’s not cleaned well and can start to colonise and eat away at tooth enamel. Regular brushing and flossing will help to get rid of this but once it starts to harden, regular tooth brushing will not be able to clean it off. Over time, the plaque becomes tartar or calculus and this is why you need to get your teeth cleaned professionally ideally every 6 months. Regular oral hygiene, combined with professional measures keeps biofilm under control for better health.
What actually happens during an EMS Airflow cleaning procedure?
For an effective clean with EMS Airflow, a cheek and lip retractor is placed in the mouth. We make sure to put Vaseline on our patient’s lips for optimum comfort as the lips can be stretched slightly. EMS Airflow treatment begins with applying plaque disclosing gel, a purple coloured gel to show the areas with plaque on the teeth and also demonstrate to patients where more brushing and attention is needed. Next, removing the biofilm on the surfaces of the teeth using the plaque disclosing gel, it is most effective and precise as no areas are missed. Once the teeth are free from sticky plaque, any remaining hard buildup is cleaned off with the Piezon scaler. Many patients have said the EMS Airflow is more comfortable in comparison to the traditional cleaning method. There are still cases where the traditional cleaning is carried out if the patient prefers or if there is limited mouth opening/space. Dr Indran will assess and offer the best method.
DISCLOSE
Make Biofilm visible:
- We use a purple coloured EMS Biofilm Discloser to show you where you need to focus more on brushing or where you have missed.
- The color will guide biofilm removal
- Once biofilm is removed, calculus is easier to detect
AIRFLOW®
- Remove biofilm, stains and early calculus. Highly precise and effective
PIEZON® PS
- Remove hardened plaque (calculus/tartar)
PREVENT CARIES
- Biofilm is not always visible to the naked eye. Disclosing biofilm helps to remove all biofilm
DETECT CARIES AT AN EARLY STAGE
- Caries often develop in areas not accessible by rubber cups or brushes, such as interdental areas, pits and fissures. AIRFLOW® cleans it all. A final check delivers a more accurate, precise and early detection of caries on clean surfaces. Also, it allows fluoride to access a clean tooth more easily.
